A Brief History
Platted in 1888, the city began as a station on the Rock Island Railroad. It was named for Robert Brewster, a railroad foreman who helped lay tracks through the area.A few months after its platting, Brewster had a population of about 80 residents, mainly living in tents and sod houses.Originally, the area post office was located in Hastings, two miles north and a mile east of Brewster, but it was relocated to Brewster in 1888. Hastings businesses followed the post office by setting up shop in Brewster. By 1909, the newspaper reported Brewster's population was 500, and the town had three general stores, a restaurant and lodging house, a hardware, implement and furniture store, a meat market, a grocery, bank, livery stable, men's clothing store, school and a hotel. In 1920, Brewster was incorporated as a second-class city, enabling it to issue bonds to build power lines to Colby. Brewster built a water works in 1930 and issued bonds for a new sewer system the next year.Movies came to Brewster in the 1920s. Charley Mallory built the Liberty Theatre, now closed, in 1925. Brewster formed a school district in 1888, less than two months after the town was platted, and classes started Jan. 14, 1889.
